Beamforming is especially useful in 5G networks, because higher frequencies (such as mmWave) have shorter ranges and are more prone to obstructions.

The design and spacing of the antenna array have a significant impact on a MIMO system's performance. If antennas are put too near together, their signals may overlap, decreasing the efficacy of spatial multiplexing. Engineers must carefully construct arrays to achieve appropriate separation, alignment, and configuration for the desired frequency spectrum and application.
